Managing IT Infrastructure Project

Information Technology has revolutionized today’s business process thus the corporate industries rely to its digital capabilities. Services from banking, shopping and purchasing informative goods like ebooks and music are made available to consumers 24 x 7.  And these are made possible not just by IT assets alone but through various IT processes. For new IT services, Project Management (PM) plays the major role from Initiation, Planning and Execution. PM  as broad process primarily use a framework called Project Management Book of Knowledge or PMBOK. It also uses Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and Control Objectives for Information and Related Technologies (COBIT). PMBOK is used for creating Project Charter. ITIL Service Design processes are used for estimating capacity, availability and DR architecture. COBIT is used for strategizing and roadmapping for the target launch. 

With the success of current technology, the infrastructure continuously evolves. As businesses become more dependent to IT, the demand for a high-performance, robust and cost eficient infrastructure is needed.  If the current design can no longer sustain the data coming in, an upgrade project is needed. An infrastructure upgrade involves changes in server, web, database or storages. For the case of overhaul, both hardware and platforms will be upgraded. 

An IT infrasrtucture may include but not limited to the following processes below. 

  • Performance & Capacity Review – these are needed to provide an objective basis for infrastructure upgrade. The information needed to support this process are also incident record of slow server response and downtime and amount of failed transactions. 
  • Technical Architecture – this refers to the visual presentation of curent and target server design. This must include server and storage model, specification (CPU, RAM,) platform version and nerwork design.  
  • Charter – this contains the justification for upgrade, technical architecture, proposed solution, investment window and recommendation. 
  • Acquisition & Delivery – ensure that there is a sufficient space in the Data Center by updating the floor plan. 
  • Build – this refers to the installation of operating system, platforms and applications. 
  • Front End Test – once the the environment is built, front end test is needed to ensure that the application will run in the new infrastructure design.  
  • Migration & Rollback Plan – this contains activities during the cutover phase. Rollback plan for anticipated risk that may happen. Migration Plan may change overnight. 
  • Deployment to Production – the actual migration of live environment to the new infrastructure. 
  • Post Implementation Activities – may include bug and error fixes and build of non-production environment. 
  • Monitoring – once new infrastructure is live to production, their performance and capacity will be monitored and should there be poor performance and capacity deficiency thus the whole process of project managemenr will repeat all over again.
