Color Intensity or Saturation is the vibrancy of colors. We can mute down the colors by applying tonal values. By muting the colors, it looks more natural. But if you want your painting to look more graphic, you can maintain the vibrancy and make it flat.
The procedures are the same as creating tonal values. Create 5 levels of gray then mix it with Ultramarine Blue. You will notice that that the Ultramarine becomes Payne’s Grey, Blue Gray and Sky Blue. By applying desaturating the colors you can produce different shades that resembles like different color.
