Color Wheel – Winsor & Newton Acrylic Paints

The Color Wheel is a framework on how to manage the basic mixing of hues or colors. They are categorized into primary, secondary and tertiary colors.

  • Primary Colors are colors that cannot be obtained from mixing other colors. They are blue, red and yellow.
  • Secondary colors are obtained by mixing the primary colors.
    • Blue + Red = Violet
    • Blue + Yellow = Green
    • Yellow + Red = Orange
  • Tertiary colors are obtained by mixing the primary and secondary colors
    • Blue + Violet = Blue Violet
    • Blue + Green = Blue Green
    • Red + Violet = Red Violet
    • Red + Orange = Red Orange
    • Yellow + Orange = Yellow Orange
    • Yellow + Green = Yellow Green

In the colorwheel, the tertiary colors have the primary dominant than the secondary. But you can also reverse the formula so you can produce these colors:

  • Violet Blue
  • Green Blue
  • Violet Red
  • Orange Red
  • Orange Yellow
  • Green Yellow
