3D Cartagena Hispanic Colonial House
Concept

My vision is to create a 3D Hispanic Colonial Town and finally I was able to start building my vision by creating a house based on Cartagena, Colombia. It’s a 2 floor house with a terrace, terracotta roof, stone walls and large doors. I put a lamp to light the house and made the house stand on a stone ground.

Creating the house is easy. The challenge is creating the plants and flowers for the terraces. If you check the Hispanic colonial houses in Cartagena, you will see that they have lots of flowering decorating the facade or the terraces of the houses. One of the widely used flowering plants is the bougainvillea. Bougainvilleas are like vines with colorful flowers that crawl on walls. They grow in abundance and if properly managed, they can grow really tall. And this is where the challenge in modeling comes in.

You see, organic objects like plants and trees are hard to do because of their texture. The more texture you need, the more vertices you need to generate, making the file heavy. Also shaping the model is challenging because they should be asymmetrical or else they won’t look natural.

For the flowers that I create, I drew the petals, joined them and applied an Array Modifier. They are in a straight line and I wasn’t able to create a bougainvillea-like cluster. For the leaves, it becomes a hedge because it’s the easiest way to create a plant. And of course we all know that bougainvillea’s leaves are not hedge shaped. Like its flowers, they are clustered.

To achieve the hedge, I applied a Hair Particle Modifier. Instead of using the default hair Path, I create a leaf and use it as an Object. That is how I create the hedge. However, everytime I open the file or run a camera movement, the default hair path appears and I have to select Object all over again.

It took me a long time to finish this model because of my busy schedule. Also creating the plants is challenging. Probably it's because it’s my first time to create plants but I still persevere. Also I feel like my house model needs more decoration which I need to do a lot of research for my next Cartagena House.
